About Online Courses
The Online Academy at Broome Community College offers a number of courses each semester that are presented over the Internet through both the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) and WebCT.
Classes do not meet on the campus. Your classmates may be from the local community or may live anywhere on the globe. You may participate anytime, anywhere you have a computer with access to the Internet. There is no specific time that you have to be online, however the courses are not self-paced. There will be class activities that you need to participate in each week.
The instructor and students are connected to each other through a computer network. Using the Internet, you can receive instruction, submit assignments, discuss issues, ask questions of fellow students and your instructors, work on group assignments, and actively participate in academic experiences; all from your home, office, or from any place you can access the Internet. The courses provide a high level of instruction and personal attention from your instructor.
Online courses are just as rigorous as traditional classes. You should expect to spend the same amount of time studying for an online course as an on-campus course. As a rule of thumb, expect to spend approximately 3 hours per week, per credit hour, working on your course.
Attendance Requirements
In an online course generally there is no specific time you have to be online, however our courses are not self-paced; there will be class activities that you need to participate in each week. Please refer to the individual course for more information. Attendance is taken weekly and isused to determine financial aid eligibility. Students must log on and submit work at least once a week to be considered attending.
