Broome Community College Online Writing Center
Welcome! This service is available to students enrolled in any Broome Community College course, whether it is an online or a campus course. This web page is part of BCC's commitment to academic excellence, regardless of the site of learning. While online tutoring lacks some of the benefits of the live, person-to-person interaction, it provides an important opportunity for feedback on your writing. If you can't schedule face-to-face appointments with a tutor in the Writing Center, try our online service. Please carefully read the Writing Center online instructions and expectations. Currently we can offer approximately five hours of online tutoring per week.
What you can and can't expect from us:
-
BCC writing tutors are trained and experienced in responding to writing, so they can help you with writing concerns such as organization, clarity, style, transitions, and other generic criteria for academic writing. While we will address sentence-level concerns (if you request assistance), we will NOT edit or proofread your work. Instead, we can point to patterns of error in your writing and suggest ways for you to develop your editing skills.
-
We will provide you with constructive, critical feedback, particularly to your specific questions and concerns. We will pose questions for you to consider as you revise, so you can see how your writing may be understood by other readers.
-
The writing tutor is not a mathematician, historian, or scientist. Please realize that while we can help you with many aspects of your writing, we can't comment on the scientific or mathematical accuracy, logic, or evidence of your work. Refer questions about the specialized content of your paper to your instructor.
-
We will try to provide feedback in a timely manner; as a general rule, expect a response in 24-48 hours.
IMPORTANT!! Include the following information at the top of your document or in a separate email (swilliams@sunybroome.edu). HINT: copy and paste the following list into your document; then insert your answers:
- Your Name
- Course Name, Number & Section
- Professor's/Instructor's Name
- Have you visited the Writing Center before (either in person or on-line)? If so, how many times?
- List past (Eng. 090 110, 111, 220, etc.) and current English and "W" (writing emphasis) courses that you have taken/are taking.
- Describe the assignment (Ask your professor/instructor to send us a copy of the assignment). Include the due date!
- What are your specific concerns and questions about your draft?
- Why are you using on-line writing tutorial assistance (ex. no appointments available in Writing Center, can't get to campus, taking an on-line course)?
