COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING
There are essential non-academic requirements of the Nursing
Program. They are the physical, psychological and professional
expectations required of a student in the Nursing Program. The
ability to perform interventions that impact patient care and
safety. For this reason, although Broome Community College is

that every applicant meets certain standards to be able to engage
in learning activities that will not endanger students, faculty
or patients.
Physical Functions:
1. Ability to perform interventions accurately in clinical situations
with dexterity, gross and fine movements
2. Ability to perform delicate manipulations which require good
eye-hand coordination
3. Ability to write legibly and correctly
4. Ambulate without assistive devices
5. Lift at least 30 pounds
6. Function in a safe manner not placing clients in jeopardy
7. Oral and writing ability with accuracy, clarity and efficiency
Psychological Functions:
1. Ability to perform accurately and quickly in clinical situations
even under stressful conditions and to adapt to changing situations
2. Ability to exercise independent judgment and to think logically
in the performance of one's duties
3. Ability to organize and to assume responsibility for one's
work
Professional Functions:
1. Ability to communicate in a professional, positive, tactful
manner with patients, physicians, nurses, other healthcare and
non-healthcare employees, and fellow personnel
2. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and to exercise
ethical judgment, integrity, honesty, dependability, and accountability
in the performance of one's responsibilities
3. Ability to perform interventions accurately while maintaining
efficiency and organization
4. Ability to exercise critical thinking skills to solve problems
5. Ability to project a well groomed, neat appearance
6. Ability to follow written or verbal directions to perform interventions
in clinical situations
