Work Experience
Due to my husband's career opportunities we have lived in several
different cities throughout the Northeast over the past nine years.
I have taught in both public and private school settings and have
had experience teaching primarily at the preschool level although
I did wear the "hat" of a fifth and sixth grade teacher
in a private school with departmentalized curriculum teaching
social studies. I worked as a preschool teacher in the Syracuse
area in an inclusion classroom in which half of the children were
identified with disabilities. This experience enlightened me to
the diverse abilities that each child possesses in several different
developmental areas. We then moved to the Capital District where
I helped launch a literature-based curriculum in a newly constructed
preschool that collaborated with Head Start and a local nursing
home in an effort to provide education to children from impoverished
backgrounds and to foster intergenerational relationships. I was
then presented with a terrific opportunity to be a preschool teacher
for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Samaritan Hospital.
In this program we concentrated on utilizing the fine arts as
a teaching tool as well as creating a project-based curriculum
adopted from Reggio Emilia. I was then recruited to assist in
the organization and implementation of a private school's first
Universal Pre-K program. During that year, we were blessed with
the birth of our twins, Owen and Olivia. As a result, I stopped
teaching, postponed my doctorate work and we relocated to the
Binghamton area to be closer to family. I was then presented with
the opportunity to be the Universal Pre-K Supervisor for Tioga
Opportunities, Inc. and ultimately a position teaching in the
Teacher Education program here at BCC.
Philosophy Statement:
I feel that children and adults learn best in a comfortable,
secure and nurturing environment that provides many stimulating
and hands-on learning opportunities. Children are our society's
greatest gift to the future and it is our responsibility as educators
to help support, educate and collaborate with families in cultivating
this "gift" they have. I have a tremendous amount of
passion for this profession and hope that this passion will be
contagious to those students committed to early education as well.
Aside from my own children and family, the students, children
and families that I work with are my inspiration for doing what
I do. I love connecting with and teaching both children and adults
and look forward to every opportunity that will result in positive
and rewarding experiences for students, children, and their families.
