Adjunct Instructor
Background:
I am a local girl! I graduated from JCHS and then went to Potsdam
College where I received a BS in Sociology and a MS in Teaching.
I was given the opportunity to teach in the Johnson City District
in 4th and 2nd grades for five years in fully integrated classrooms.
It was during that time that I took a keen interest in using
developmentally appropriate practices with young children. So,
I went back to school and took courses at SUNY Binghamton on
child development and literacy. This led to a certification in
the area of reading. Ten years ago I moved into a Reading Recovery
position where I specialized in teaching at risk 1st graders
how to read and write.
Besides teaching children, I love to work with adults. I have
presented many workshops to educators within my district and
across the country. For the past few years, I have been devoted
to working with preschool, kindergarten and first grade teachers
to improve their literacy practices.
I love books! I believe that the amount of literature that children
are exposed to is in direct correspondence to their success in
school, literacy ability and reading interest as adults. It is
reason that I wrote and received many grants which were used
to purchase thousands of books for young children.
Philosophy:
The best learning takes place when children have comfortable
and trusting relationships with their teacher and classmates.
Hands-on lesson presentations, an exciting and structured environment
as well as effective discipline techniques are a must in teaching,
but nothing has more impact on learning than relationships!
Interests:
In my time outside of the classroom, I love to play with my
husband and three children (Maddi, Jack and Samuel). Gardening,
pottery, reading and anything to do with paint and glue are interests
that I try to squeeze into my day if I have any extra time.
