Students, please call me Dr. Nilsen or Barbara
Courses I usually teach: ECE 110 Introduction to Early
Childhood and other ECE or EDU Classes. I also teach SOC 110 Intro
to Sociology online
Education: I graduated from BCC's Child Care program (now
Early Childhood) then received a bachelors and masters in social
science with emphasis on child and family from Binghamton University
and a Doctorate in Early and Middle Childhood Education from Nova
University.
Work Experience: I founded and directed First Church of
Christ Preschool, Chenango Forks, and have worked as a consultant
in early childhood and staff development. I have been at BCC full
time since 1989 as coordinator of Early Childhood then Chair of
the new Teacher Education/Early Childhood Department in 2002.
Educational philosophy: I believe that every child (and
every BCC student) deserves a community that provides a safe,
healthy start that contributes to the development of the whole
person - physically, socially, emotionally, and creatively. I
love to read and try to instill the love of good books in others.
Reading is the key to knowledge, adventure, escape from reality
- the door to life success. My door is open to students!
