Degrees & Certificates - Ph.D.(1971), M.S.(1967), B.S.(1960) - all three Physics, B.Ch.E. (1960), all four from Clarkson University; permanent New York State certification for secondary Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
Industrial Experience - Engineering (part-time) - General Electric, Pittsfield, MA; Crown Zellerbach, Carthage, NY; Stebbins Engineering, Watertown, NY.
Industrial Experience - Teaching - Magic City Ice Company (refrigeration); Universal Instruments Corp. (engineering topics for design and engineering personnel)
Teaching Experience:Broome Community College (BCC) - Engineering Science - Calculus 1, 2, 3, and differential equations; Physics 1, 2, & 3 (with calculus); service Physics (without calculus) to other than engineering students; Laplace Transforms, several Computer Drafting courses and languages, FORTRAN, Pascal, BASIC, assembler language for the IBM 4381, spreadsheet courses, engineering courses (Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Materials Science, Chemical Process I and II, HTML/JavaScript). I developed and taught several CAD courses (wrote the manuals used for two of these), the HTML/JavaScript, and the Materials Science course. I also converted several courses for online presentation for SUNYnet, including the following courses that I taught or am presently teaching: Physics 1 and 2 for engineering, Strength of Materials, Materials Science. 22 years full time; Department Chair of Engineering Science the last 1.5 years before retirement. Received recognition by students and administration for teaching methods. Retired (1998) and teaching intermittently as an adjunct professor for BCC and online for City Colleges of Chicago-Europe (until Jan 2003). Granted Professor Emeritus status by BCC.Potsdam High School - 9.5 years teaching Math, Physics, and Computer Science; Department Chair for Science the last two years (1971 - 1981)Publishing: Eight journal articles and manuals as first or sole author, 5 journal articles as secondary author, several presentations at conferences (most recently, at the ASEE Zone meeting at West Point).Other Technical: Owner of Redcomp Services, a software and educational services company. Redcomp Services recently supplied software to City Colleges of Chicago-Europe so that Engineering Physics I, II and III might be taught online to military personnel. Secretary of the Triple Cities Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society for ten years and one of the primary organizers of a regional annual Science Fair (April 2003) sponsored by Sigma Xi, BCC, and others.
Community & Professional Activities: Scouting {Scoutmaster for 23 years; District Chair, Finance Chair, Training Chair, District Commissioner; various District & Council awards, including Silver Beaver; presently Assistant Advisor of an Engineering Explorer Post, member of the District Eagle review committee, District Service Team Chair and Membership Chair (for Exploring), Chair pro tem for the Exploring Division, and Committee Chair of a Scout Troop}; American Cancer Society (Daffodil chair for several years at BCC, Bike-a-thon co-chair for 5 years earning $50K); various church activities, including fund raising, member and President of the Parish Council, and lector. Designer of several web sites (for the local BSA Council, BetaCoalition (an NSF funded endeavor at Binghamton University), Triple Cities-NY Chapter of Sigma Xi (general information & regional Science Fair), two Sigma Xi regional constituencies, Redcomp Services (my own company), and St. Christopher's Parish).
Other Interests: Chess, backpacking, canoeing. As Membership Chair for Exploring (present position) in the local Scout Council, I organized and now provide continuous support for eighteen Chess Learning-for-Life Groups in various Boys & Girls Clubs, Children's Homes, a church, and a prison (the intent was to try to reach under-served groups in urban areas and prisons). In 1993, I thru-hiked the 2100 mile Appalachian Trail and, in 2000, the 470 mile Colorado Trail. I developed a web site for those needing help finding lodging along the Appalachian Trail. I hiked most of the Long Trail (MA to Canada, through Vermont) and the 120-mile Northville-Placid Trail about 7 or 8 times, and also portions of the Finger Lakes Trail. I'm a member of the 46er group (#911), which is open to those who hike to the tops of the 46 over-4000 ft peaks of the Adirondacks.
My home site displays several of my online efforts, but the major online teaching efforts (through the SUNY Learning Net) are password protected. I may be able to arrange for a temporary password if anyone wishes to review these materials and courses, although these were taught several years ago. The most recent courses that I taught are the Chemical Processes I , Chemical Processes II* and Strength of Materials courses. These were not really online since I met the students for classes and labs, but I supplied many of the materials online (and also wrote the code). I also taught online for City Colleges of Chicago-Europe (Physics and Fortran for military personnel in Europe and the Middle East) for 2.5 years. I'm presently (fall 2006) preparing to teach a review course for engineers who wish to take the licensing exam, and I expect to teach Materials Science online in the spring.
