Example 2 - A Rod and a Cylinder

Problem: A cylinder of diameter 9 cm and mass 2.3 kg is attached to the end of a 1 meter-long narrow bar of mass 1.2 kg. The combination is set in oscillation as a pendulum with its pivot about point A as shown. What is the kinetic energy when the angular velocity is 1.7 rad/s?

Solution: The moment of inertia of the system is 2.70 kg m2 (from a previous example).

Of course, most of the work was already done in the earlier example!
