Course Outline
3 HOURS LECTURE PER WEEK

PREREQUISITE: None
CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
An in-depth examination of the
Internet and how it is used in modern business. Basic Internet tools such as
Gopher, Lynx, FTP, Telnet and Netscape. Direct personal communications using e-mail,
listserves, Usenet and IRC, including how to set up your own discussion
platforms. Using search engines such as Lycos, Alta Vista, WebCrawler, Whois,
Netfind, and others to find business sites. To gain an understanding of how the
search engines priortize their responses so that the students can be assured
that any sites they create will be easily found by potential customers. How the
Internet is being used for marketing, advertising and market research. Use of
the Internet by financial institutions and mercantile operations. HTML and home
page construction, including strategic issues for an effective page
contruction. Security issues, cybercash, "netiquette," future
business trends and other issues in business uses of the Internet.
DEPARTMENTAL POLICY:
The minimum passing grade is
65%.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of
this course, the student will:
- Know the history,
evolution, mechanics, and capabilities of the Internet, including an
understanding of future trends.
- Be able to use a variety
of basic Internet tools, including Gopher, Lynx, FTP, Telnet,, and FAQs.
Know enough "netiquette" to be able to interact effectively on
the net.
- Be able to use various
means of direct computer communications and discussion platforms such as
e-mail, Listserve, IRC and Usenet, including the ability to set up a
discussion platform.
- Have the ability to
conduct comprehensive research using Lycos, Web Crawler, Yahoo, Nikos,
WWW, Veronica, Jughead, Wais, Einet Galaxy, Whois, Finger, Netfind,
"Bots," and others. Understand how business uses search engines
and their importance in business applications.
- Have current knowledge of
how the Internet is being used for marketing, advertising, market
research, and direct marketing. Study of retail and service businesses
online is included, with attention to security issues, cybercash,
digicash, domain name registration, etc.
- Understand how financial
institutions such as banks, securities dealers, insurance and real estate
sellers and others are using the Internet as a sales medium.
- Understand basic hypertext
markup language and be able to use it to construct a homepage. Understand
the tactics and issues that are important in the construction of a good
business page.
- Learn to use online
resources, including courses at other schools, as information sources for
learning.
